The Site had received almost no maintenance since installation, so an immediate tear-down was warranted.   We found that the draft tube had been lost from turbine 1, and that the the guide vane control arms were frozen in rust.

Kelly Running Hoist # 3

The new hoists were used to help loosen and reset and move the turbine pieces.

Here we removed and replaced all the bolts over two days so that the turbines could be quickly disassembled later.

The bolts weigh about 3 lbs, and had not been moved in 25 years.

Dick Removing Generator from Turbine II

Later, Dick and Neil are here started the  complete disassembly.

The generator has just been lowered to the deck behind the gray one in front with hoist # 1.

The hoists are rated at 5 tons which is not enough to lift the generator and turbine together, so they have to be disassembled each time.

Turbine Coming Out

The 52 foot head allows for 40" penstock.  It is here being lifted out nearly vertically with hoist # 1.

The generator has already been removed. and is on the deck to the left of Dick.

Generator and turbine

186 kW. generator weighs about 2 tons. The turbine is just under 3 tons.

The top of the draft tube is seen at the bottom below the guide vane ring shroud.

Trunion Arms

These arms rotate the guide vanes changing the power output of the generator.  As found, they were frozen in rust that lines the inside of the turbine.

These guide vanes fill a throat just above the runner. The throats on both turbines will be removed in late 2009 and epoxy lined and replaced by Kelly and Neil.

Dick and Kelly Finishing Working on Site Preparation

The generator has just been lowered to the deck behind the gray one in front.   The hoists are rated at 5 tons which is not enough to lift the generator and turbine.

The clothes are usually completely covered with various greases by the end of the day.  These are special waterproof pump greases designed not to come off in water and soap.
